Best and easiest cherry crumble cake recipe
In the world of baking, there are few things more tempting than the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked cake. Among the many delicious options, this cherry crumble cake stands out with its juicy cherry topping and crispy crumbles.
Fresh cherries, sour cherries or morello cherries?
Fresh cherries, whether sweet or sour cherries, give the cake a natural freshness and a slightly sweet taste that harmonizes well with the batter and crumbles. However, fresh cherries require additional preparation as they need to be pitted, and they can be more expensive than other options depending on the season and availability.
Sour cherries are fresh cherries with a similar sour taste to morello cherries. However, they need to be pitted before they can be used in the cake. Fresh sour cherries can have a slightly more subtle tartness than morello cherries, but their flavor and freshness are incomparable. They are great for cakes when they are in season and you have the time to prepare them.
Morello cherries are a special variety of sour cherries that are often sold in jars or tins. They are already pitted and can be used straight away, which makes preparation easier. We recommend draining the juice from the cherries and allowing them to dry slightly. We often use the time when the yeast dough has to rest for this.
If you prefer a separate layer in the cake, you can thicken the cherries with a little cherry juice and spread them over the cake. You can use cake glaze, flour or cornflour to thicken the cake. We prefer our cake with the pure cherries.
Morello cherries have an intense sour taste and a deep red color, which gives the cake a beautiful appearance. Their juiciness and strong aroma make them a popular choice for our cherry crumble cake recipe.
Aromatic sheet cake with yeast
A key component of the cherry crumble cake recipe is the yeast dough. Yeast dough differs from other types of dough in the way it is used. The dough needs a resting phase to rise and develop its enticing aroma. Its airy texture and unique taste give the cake an irresistible lightness.
The use of yeast as a raising agent means that the dough rises slowly and develops delicious aromas. This slow fermentation not only gives the cake a better texture, but also a distinctive taste that sets it apart from other types of cake. However, if you need it quicker, we like to bake our crumble cake without yeast.
The perfect crumbles
What makes the cherry crumble cake really irresistible is, of course, the crumble. Crispy, buttery and coated with a fine layer of sugar, they form a delicious crust that combines perfectly with the soft texture of the yeast dough and the juicy cherry topping.
The crumbles not only provide an extra crispy texture, but also a wonderful, delicious taste. Their buttery note and sweet aroma make every bite a real treat.
